Union County's housing stock was shaped by the railroad. When the Central Railroad of New Jersey pushed through Cranford, Westfield and Summit in the late 1800s, it triggered waves of Victorian, Craftsman, Tudor and Colonial development that still define those towns. Summit's Downtown Historic District is listed on the National Register largely for architecture built between 1890 and 1930; its North Side holds more than 100 Tudor Revival homes. Westfield's Gardens district is a Colonial Revival neighborhood developed from 1909 through the war years.

Then came the postwar build-out — the 1920s-to-1950s Cape Cods in Cranford and Fanwood, the mid-century ranches in Clark and Springfield. County-wide, more homes were built in the 1950s than in any other decade.

That mix means a Union County estate can be almost anything: a Tudor full of period antiques, or a ranch where a couple lived for fifty years and kept every appliance box.
